Pebble In Your Shoe

I was recently in the park with my kids playing on the jungle gym.  My oldest daughter was immensely satisfied that she made it across the monkey bard without falling.  My youngest daughter, quickly trying to imitate with mixed results.  My youngest son kept on walking around with a strange gait while whining, complaining, and fussing.

Isn’t it interesting, all of us have been in each one of those situations at some point in our life? Perhaps you are celebrating a recent win at work or at home where a significant atta-boy or atta-girl are in high order. Perhaps you are trying to find a new hobby or discipline to master so you are seeking out an expert who can teach you what you need to get started. Perhaps you are at a position where you want to succeed but it seems as if you take two steps backward for every one step forward.  What if it is all three scenarios simultaneously?

After discovering that my son had some small pebbles in his shoe, I had a small revelation when putting the shoe back on his foot and watching him admire the excitement of his sisters.  Isn’t the experience my son had with the pebbles in his shoe is just like life?  We pretend to ourselves that we are in full control? We pretend to ourselves that we are the master of our own universe. We justify our whining and complaining when things aren’t going as well as we hoped.  The thing is, our whining and complaining never produces the satisfaction and relief that we need to move forward.

My big takeaway – sometimes we need help to get us unstuck if we are to admire and be inspired by those who are experiencing and doing what we want to experience and do.

  • After the pebbles are removed, what specific task, project,or skill do you want to master?

  • Who do you know that is trying to master the same task, project, or skill?

  • Who do you know that is successful at the same task, project, or skill?
